In the summer of 2022, Thomas and I sat down and thought about our travel plans for the next year. Greece was at the top of my list (and it had been for nearly two decades). We decided 2023 was going to be the year – Greece was happening. It can be hard to plan vacations as a wedding photographer. Our weekends get booked up 9-12 months in advance and you really have to carve out the time on the calendar before it is just too late to manage an extended trip between events. A few months later, we were photographing Casey & Gavin’s San Francisco engagement session and the topic of honeymoons came up. They were planning on going to Greece. Ding! Ding! Ding! The pieces came together, my eyes lit up and we talked about our hope to explore Greece as well. Sure enough, one thing lead to another, and we had officially invited ourselves on their honeymoon (they were so gracious about it!). After triple checking they were okay with it, we booked our flights! The day after their wedding, we hustled (sent out their previews, backed up their files, mailed their film) and were on a flight to Athens that evening to meet them in Santorini just days later. It was so fun to be at their wedding, hugging them goodbye at the end of the night just to say “See you in a few days! In GREECE!”

After a few days of exploring Santorini, we met up with Casey and Gavin for about an hour to take honeymoon photos in Santorini. As incredibly beautiful as Santorini is, it certainly has attracted the tourists, even in the shoulder season. I was nervous going into the session – will we be able to find pockets without people? Are we going to have to wait in line for 30 minutes to get “the shot”? Are we going to be able to be respectful of the other tourists?

Thomas and I splurged and stayed in the heart of Oia, so we were able to take a few photos of Casey and Gavin near the iconic blue domes in privacy, and from there, we explored some of the outer corners of the beautiful city. It filled my soul and checked off a huge bucket-list item for me. After the session, we enjoyed some fun cocktails, and of course, a Greek salad, to celebrate the beginning of their marriage. It was such a treat!
