Kate & Avery: A Bok Tower Engagement Session

December 3, 2020

Kate and Avery’s Bok Tower engagement session was a good one! I often talk about how much I love California, but man, I felt like a kid in a candy store being back at Bok Tower! The beautiful light! The drippy Spanish Moss! The lush greens! Plus, there’s some sentimental value for us because Thomas and I got married there almost five years ago. Luckily for us, Bok Tower was special for Kate and Avery too and that’s where they wanted to take their engagement photos. We were thrilled to finally get together and make this happen (after more than a year of anticipation and 3 reschedules…)!

Kate and Avery met in 7th grade. Although they weren’t in the same friend group at that time, they were acquaintances and had many of the same experiences throughout middle and high school. For college, they stayed local to the Tampa area – Avery going to USF and Kate studying at USF St. Pete. A mutual friend connected them, and sure enough, they hit it off on that first date – enjoying gelato and chatting on the sea wall hours after sunset.

Four years later, Avery couldn’t keep the secret and let Kate know that he had asked her dad for permission to marry her. Kate’s engagement ring is incredibly meaningful. The main diamond was the stone that her father had proposed to her mother with (but has since been upgraded) and six of the stones on the band are Avery’s grandmother’s. Truly a family heirloom. Avery asked Kate to marry him at her apartment – the same spot where they shared their first kiss and exchanged their first “I love you’s.”

For their Bok Tower engagement session, we were all so excited that this moment we had anticipated was finally happening! I felt calm to be back in a location I was so familiar with. It was so fun to just take the opportunity to get to know these two more and anticipate their wedding day that would happen just one week later! Kate and Avery have the kindest souls. They are incredibly resilient and have had to roll with more punches than anyone should this year. They have such a good energy together and they fell into poses so naturally! I felt like I constantly was telling them to “just stop right there!” as I was changing my roll of film. I could have photographed them for hours!

Kate and Avery, thank you so much for being so flexible with us over the last few months. I can say now that it was worth the wait! We absolutely loved being back at Bok Tower with you both and feel so lucky that we have the opportunity to work with you both! Your images bring a smile to my face and make my heart so happy! I love remembering this day.
