Moving in and Moving Forward

June 13, 2015

When you decide to create a lasting bond with the one you love, you’ll probably also be looking to updating some parts of your lifestyle to start anew with your partner. Updating your shared living space is one great way to start this new season of your relationship together. This might entail moving to a new home, or simply updating your interior to display your joint styles now that you are married. Your space should be a reflection of both of you, and with a few quick tips you can have a fresh new space that feels like home where your love can flourish and new memories can be made for years to come.

Decide what to Donate, Keep and Buy New

Join forces with your partner to take inventory of what you already have and what you need for your new home. If you aren’t looking to move out of your current space right away, investing in new furniture pieces is a great way to make your space feel like new. When deciding what you’re going to upgrade, start with your biggest furniture pieces that set the tone for the room. Invest in pieces that will last, like a wooden dining table or bedroom set that you love. After you invest in the big pieces, you can shape the rest of your accessories around the room to achieve a well-rounded look. If you aren’t ready to invest in any new furniture pieces, take a look around online on second hand websites like craigslist or Letgo for a nice vintage or more affordable piece that can accent your space.

Have the Decor Discussion

One of the most exciting parts about moving in with your partner or making some upgrades to space is deciding on a theme and how you are going to decorate. It’s important when you are going through this process to take your partner’s ideas and preferences into consideration. If you aren’t sure what style best suits you, take some time to sit down with each other and peruse pinterest or watch a few episodes of House Hunters. If you find that you and your partner have differing tastes, try to merge your decor-tastes into something all your own! If you are struggling with where to begin, don’t be afraid to reach out to a professional interior designer who can sit down with you and your partner to help you design the space of your dreams.

Add a Personal Touch

After you have adoned your space with new furnishings or have sought help from a designer, your new space will feel almost perfect. The final touch to bring your space together and make it feel like your own, are the personal touches that you add to it. Whether that is a photo-gallery wall or unique pieces of art that mean something to you, you’ll want a few pieces that are signature to your passions and personality. Filling the walls and  shelves with meaningful memories and souvenirs can act as reminders of how you came together, and give you fun talking points when entertaining guests!
