Occasionally we photograph high school sweethearts – but for this Carneros Resort Hilltop wedding we got to photograph a couple that has known each other since middle school! While they didn’t date until the end high school, I still think it is amazing that Ra’eesah and Derek have known each other for so long and have that shared connection from their adolescence. That history allowed them to grow through long distance – and still continue a relationship through law school together in Arizona. About five years ago they headed to the Pacific Northwest and put down roots in Seattle. After being engaged for many years, one morning Ra’eesah woke up and said “let’s get married…!” and the planning began!

Ra’eesah and Derek are our kind of people. They have a warmth within them that is so welcoming and kind. When we met up for their engagement session, we spent hours chatting over dinner and boardgames (ugh, and lost a round of Pandemic – next time…). They are passionate people who love animals and love learning. Did I mention they were kind? Ra’eesah gifted me an Apple watch as a thank you after her wedding (when she heard my phone constantly dinging on the wedding day on loud… oops! I need to hear my phone if the planner needs me!). So thoughtful and it has been truly life changing!

After getting ready the morning of their wedding, Ra’eesah and Derek met up for their first look. Giddy with excitement and nerves, they melted into each other. They were back in their comfort zone together. Then, Ra’eesah handed Derek a letter to read – a surprise to him. Shortly after he finished reading, Derek pulled out a letter out of his pocket – a surprise to Ra’eesah. I love that they both had the same idea and can look back on those notes for decades to come.

Ra’eesah and Derek had their ceremony at the top of Carneros Resort Hilltop – overlooking the beautiful rolling hills of northern California wine country. They exchanged vows and recessed down the aisle in a shower of rose petals.

Their reception area was filled with meaningful details that represented their love for reading and fantasy (like the bunting from the Lord of the Rings party!). I love that they went out of their way to include details that were meaningful to them.

Ra’eesah and Derek – thank you for being a breath of fresh air. We loved working with you – getting to know you was a highlight of our year. I hope we have many reunions over boardgames in our future! Thank you for everything!
